Video: Hand-Sized Aliens?

At first I thought these were cool little responsive robots, but no… they are alive! What are they? In this video you are seeing two devil’s flower mantids.

Here is a detailed still:

When it comes to life, you have not yet seen it all.

Idolomantis diabolica, commonly known as the devil’s flower mantis or giant devil’s flower mantis, is one of the largest species of praying mantis, possibly the largest that mimicsflowers. It is the only species classified under the genus Idolomantis

Via Wikipedia

The females reach up to 13 cm (5.1 inches) in length and are usually sought after for their magnificent colors. The mantis is native to Africa, found in Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Somalia, Tanzania and Uganda.

Imitating a flower as these insects do is one clever way to attract food.

Surprising undiscovered species with effective camouflage could be all around us.

  1. It looks awesome. I’m sure movie makers have modeled some of the aliens on weird animals and insects we have here on earth !
