Bonzo’s Last Stand, A Bootleg Led Zeppelin Rehearsal

Today I enjoyed listening to a rare Led Zeppelin rehearsal bootleg on vinyl. It is the last rehearsal the band recorded about five months before drummer John Bonham died.

John Henry Bonham (31 May 1948 – 25 September 1980) was an English musician and songwriter, best known as the drummer for the British rock band Led Zeppelin. Bonham was esteemed for his speed, power, fast bass-drumming, distinctive sound, and “feel” for the groove. He is regarded as one of the greatest and most influential rock drummers of all time. Rolling Stone magazine ranked him number 1 in their list of the “100 Greatest Drummers of All Time.”

This bootleg holds the last recorded rehearsal by the band, recorded at New Victoria Theatre, London on 1st May, 1980. (This is not the last rehearsal, which was on 25 September, the day Bonham died)

Sound quality is OK but a little muddy, and not stereo, as the cover claims.

It’s fun to find rare recordings of famous bands. These rockers were amazing musicians and you can hear that raw talent in these recordings.

  1. First bootleg I owned was Led Zeppelin “Mudslide”, saved from the trash by some idiot. Good memories!
