Polish Sextuplets a Surprise +1

Only one in roughly five billion human pregnancies results in sextuplets (six babies). This highly unlikely event happened two days ago for a woman in Poland. She and her husband have been celebrated across the country. The kids were given life-long tickets by a soccer team and a congratulatory tweet from the country’s president.

… “It is the first time in Poland that sextuplets are born, and it is rare in the world,” said chief of the hospital’s neonatology ward, Prof. Ryszard Lauterbach.

He said it came as a surprise because doctors were expecting five babies.

“We had five teams with five incubators ready waiting, and when all were taken another baby, a girl, appeared,” Lauterbach said on TVN24.

He praised doctors for getting the pregnancy to the 29th week. …

President Andrzej Duda congratulated the parents and the doctors on Twitter, while the local football club, Cracovia, has offered life-long tickets and said they were keeping fingers crossed for the babies.

“We don’t know who your parents are rooting for, but we are giving you, kids, permanent subscription to tickets,” Cracovia said in a tweet.

Doctor Ryszard Lauterbach at the University Hospital said the babies were “born in a condition surprisingly good for sextuplets,” but their respiratory, nervous and digestive systems are immature and require medical care.

Their mother, Klaudia Marzec, is “very involved, smiling and happy”, according to the physician.

He noted that the 29-year-old woman already has a two-year-old boy.

The sextuplets were a surprise to the family, Marzec told TVN24, as they were expecting just five babies.

“We have made some logistical plans at home for five, but now they will need to be changed,” Marzec said. “Now we just want them to leave hospital in the best condition possible.”

Their father, Szymon Marzec, said their arrival was a “great joy, but we also have plenty of concerns”.

Another woman, Courtney Waldron, of Albertville Alabama in the US gave birth to sextuplets last year, March 2018 (NationalPost).

Ecology.com says that worldwide, there are 131.4 million human births per year (2011 estimate), so given Courtney’s sextuplets, Klaudia’s sextuplets in Poland are over 4 billion births premature … by the given odds of 1 in 4.7 billion.

Of course, odds don’t work that way. If you get 10 heads in a row on coin tosses with a fair normal coin, the odds of getting heads on the 11th toss are still 50-50.

Nevertheless, are the odds of sextuplets in 2019 changing, or have they may have been greatly “mis- underestimated”? Consider this:

On March 15th of this year, Themla Chiaka had sextuplets in Houston, Texas.

A Houston woman beat the odds of one in 4.7 billion after giving birth to sextuplets at The Woman’s Hospital of Texas in the United States.

The Woman’s Hospital of Texas said Thelma Chiaka delivered sextuplets early Friday morning in Houston. Her twin girls and two sets of twin boys were born between 4:50 a.m. and 4:59 a.m.

Strange indeed. Sextuplets March 15th, 2019 and again a few months later in Poland on May 21, 2019.
