The Mariah Carey vs Marie Curie Cake Incident

In an amusing misunderstanding a woman in the UK who asked for a Mariah Carey themed cake instead received a cake with a festive Marie Curie theme. Curie was famous physicist, Carey a famous contemporary pop singer.

Toronto-based novelist Harriet Alida Lye revealed on Twitter how her cousin in England, Siobhan Casey, had asked her colleagues at the HOPE for Chronic Conditions charity for a Carey-themed sweet treat to mark her special day.

Marie Curie (1867 – 1934) was famous for her pioneering work with radiation.

She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, the first person and only woman to win the Nobel prize twice, and the only person to win the Nobel Prize in two different scientific fields. She was part of the Curie family legacy of five Nobel Prizes. She was also the first woman to become a professor at the University of Paris, and in 1995 became the first woman to be entombed on her own merits in the Panthéon in Paris.

Here is a sample of Mariah Carey songs:

Mariah Carey is an American singer, songwriter, and actress. Referred to as the “Songbird Supreme” by the Guinness World Records, she is noted for her five-octave vocal range, melismatic singing style, and signature use of the whistle register.

Carey became the only artist ever to have their first five singles reach number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart

Although they seem far apart in time and profession, both famous women (with somewhat similar sounding names?) unquestionably made life better for others using their exceptional talents.

  1. Yes, that is truly amusing – though I would submit Marie’s contributions to humanity were a bit more substantial.

    • Thanks Stephen, I was thinking about that issue when posting, the question of the biggest positive impact a person can have. To me it seems an orange should be an excellent orange and an apple an excellent apple. Which begs the question: How do we find our life “voice” that thing we should do based on our personal tastes and talents? It takes many people a long time to find their unique value, or as Steve Martin says in “the Jerk”, their “special purpose”.

People I admire are all different, musicians, scientists, artists, inventors, health guru’s, chefs, secret agents, researchers, doctors, technicians, writers, actors, etc. but all self-actualized in terms of acting on their gifts. There are also people whose core gift is seeing and helping others see theirs. These are the best life coaches, psychics, teachers, therapists, clergy, etc.

Your site made me want to buy and read one of your books if I ever get the chance. 👍
