Assistive technology is a diverse field spanning a wide range of products. These devices are geared toward a wide range of device users with a very diverse range of learning or physical disabilities. While encouraging private companies to develop assistive technologies poses many challenges, some of these barriers may be as simple as consumer awareness. For example, barriers to development may stem from a history of discrimination in engineering and medical research. Despite these challenges, the availability of accessible products has improved over the past decade.
