A rooftop chase scene is always one of the most exciting to watch. There is the chance the hero or villain might fall to their doom, or make a dramatic escape to a waiting boat or car. One of the best rooftop chase scenes happens in the steampunk fantasy film The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Although it was put into the shade by the Lord of the Rings, which came out at the same time, it’s still quite the enjoyable romp.
It’s based around famous characters from Victorian and turn of the 20th-century literacy. The British Empire is under threat and the Secret Service asks the African explorer Allan Quatermain to gather together a team to thwart it. They have already recruited the famous Captain Nemo and his submarine the Nautilaus to ferry them around the world. US Special Agent Tom Sawyer joins along with the immortal Dorian Grey and Mrs Mina Harker, a lady deeply affected by her brush with Count Dracula. The Invisible man is also part of the team.
They just need to find Dr Jerkyl, who is currently hiding out in Paris as Mr Hyde. Sawyer and Quatermain pursue Mr Hyde as he inspects the Parisian Roof sealant of the Rue Morgue. Leaping from rooftop to rooftop, the immensely strong and ape-like Hyde almost escapes them only to be forced into a trap set by Nemo and his crew.
