5 common boiler issues – and their fixes

Some of the most common boiler issues/problems that you may face are outlined below, together with how to deal with them.

No heating or hot water

The boiler is responsible for providing you with both of these. The first thing to check is the thermostat. This may accidentally have been turned down. Readjusting as needed should hopefully fix this. If not, it may need replacing.

If you have hot water but the central heating isn’t working, this is likely to be a faulty component, so you should contact a heating professional for help.

The pilot light keeps extinguishing

The most common cause for this issue is a broken thermocouple. Alternatively, there may be some build-up on the nozzle, or a draught could be blowing the flame out.

Check your other gas appliances to see if they are working. If they aren’t, contact your gas supplier. If they are, you can try reigniting the pilot light manually.

Strange noises

Vibrating, gurgling, banging or whistling noises are usually a result of air in the system, although they can have other causes. Check connectors and settings and potentially consider bleeding your radiators.

Leaks

Leaking boilers are often the result of either corrosion or a broken seal or valve. If you can identify the leaking point, use a pot or bucket to collect the water rather than letting it drip on carpet/flooring. Once that is in place, call an engineer who will be able to come and inspect the boiler and replace any broken components

Low boiler pressure

If the reading on your boiler’s pressure gauge falls below one, this will need attention. The first thing to try is re-pressurising the system. Your instruction manual should tell you how to do this.

If this doesn’t fix the issue, there may be a leak or failed component, so you should call an engineer ASAP.
