How Llandudno Has Evolved Since Victorian Times

Llandudno is a magical place to visit, but to truly appreciate this stunning place, you need to understand its history.

A Victorian Tourist Hotspot

Llandudno became a popular place to visit during the Victoria era and became even more popular when a local came up with the idea of a cable tramway to transport guests in and out of the town. The first car travelled the tracks on 31st July, 1902, from Victoria Station, and suddenly the mountainous region was abuzz with people of all ages and from all walks of life.

The best way to explore the area today is by staying in a luxury hotel in Llandudno.

What Was the Initial Attraction?

Aside from being a beautiful seaside town, Llandudno had lots more to offer its new admirers. The Great Orme, for one, was a large limestone hill that towered over 200 metres above the sea. Still prominent today, this attraction offered fantastic views. Did you know the tram still operates to this day?

On top of this landmark, there was wonderful scenery, fascinating wildlife and a lighthouse. In 1969, a cable car was added to Llandudno offering breathtaking aerial views of the area nicknamed the Happy Valley. It is the longest in Great Britain.

Modern Renovations in Llandudno

Fast forward to the 1980s, and a 300-metre dry ski slope and toboggan run was built near the Happy Valley where the Artificial Ski Championships are held each year.

But as well as continually bettering the tourist hotspot with modern technology, the town also celebrates its history with a state-of-the-art visitor centre that throws a spotlight on the history of the ancient headland and its rich wildlife. Another wonderful museum tells of how archaeologists have explored the old copper mines beneath the Orme and found tunnels that date back to the Bronze Age, with underground visits and audio-visual observations in place to help visitors get a glimpse of the lives of prehistoric people.

You see? It’s a fascinating place!
