Preparing a best man speech
The best man’s speech is the highlight of any wedding. The best man will take the character of the blue-eyed boy and turn it into tiny comic pieces, so that everyone can laugh.
A good best man speech (or even a decent one) is not easy.
The Basics
Order of Speakers:
- Father of the Bride speech
- Groom Speech
- Best Man Speech
After the father of the bride and the groom, the best man will be the third speaker.
Duration
The average wedding speech is 7 minutes long. Don’t go over 7 minutes, no matter how many bullets you want to fire at the groom. For help with a Best Man Speech Template, visit https://www.speechy.com/product/best-man-speech-template/
Formalities
You should include a few details in your best man’s speech.
- Thank yous – Thank the groom on behalf of bridesmaids, groomsmen and any gifts that were presented to the newlyweds by them during the speech.
- Postman – Deliver any messages left by guests who were unable to attend. This could be done through reading emails, cards, or even text messages. You can check with the parents or groom for important messages.
- Toast – Finish your speech by toasting the happy couple.
Language
It’s not a good idea to tell all of your favourite Frankie Boyle jokes. It’s the same with cheap jokes and innuendos. If it feels wrong to Grandma, then leave it! When in doubt, it’s best to keep things clean.
Don’t drink too much Dutch courage! Alcohol can dry out your mouth and increase nerves.
Practice your speech. You’ll become more confident the more you practice.
Do not be dull. There’s nothing more boring than the same old jokes that everyone has heard. Everyone will think that you invented them if you come up with some new jokes.
Do use cue cards. It can be difficult to hold a large sheet of paper, and it may even shake when you are nervous. Instead, write your speech on smaller cards.
